Iceland is already reeling from three volcanic eruptions in as many months, but there could soon be more to come. 

Scientists warn that magma is once again accumulating beneath Svartsengi in the Reykjanes Peninsula, a volcanic hotspot southwest of capital Reykjavik. 

According to the Icelandic Meteorological Office (IMO), the volume of magma beneath Svartsengi is reaching similar level as prior to last eruptions between December and earlier this month.

Vesuvius might be the most famous volcano of all time, pummelling the ancient city of Pompeii thousands of years ago in 79AD.

Conservative estimates put the death toll at 2,000 people, but some say as many as 16,000 may have perished if including nearby Herculaneum.

Authorities ordered the evacuation of a handful of communities in central Greece on Wednesday (26 July) as they battled new fire fronts in the country, supercharged by strong winds and heatwave temperatures exceeding 40 Celsius.

Sixty-one wildfires erupted across Greece in the last 24 hours alone, the fire brigade said, with the worst outbreaks near the central town of Velestino where officials ordered precautionary evacuations of six nearby communities.
