Safe dip into summer holidays – EURACTIV.com

Welcome to our last Health Brief before the holidays! We have prepared a summer holiday special for a carefree healthy summer! See you all in September in a new format! 

While Roy Ayers rightly sang that “Everybody Loves The Sunshine,” with temperatures breaking records around Europe, surpassing 40 °C in most southern countries, it is important to protect from ‘overdosing’ on sun and heat. Here are the most important tips:

 

What could be better than going for a dip on a hot summer day? But the blessing of refreshing water comes with danger. It is estimated that in the WHO Europe Region, drowning kills 20,000 people each year. 

With warm weather, insects such as mosquitoes and ticks are back. Mosquito bites are usually harmless, but due to climate change, disease-carrying mosquitoes are now seen in Europe too. In the meantime, bear in mind that ticks can transmit tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) and Lyme disease.
