‘Classic’ Chanel-inspired shoes loved by Princess Kate are a ‘staple’

Kate, Princess of Wales is known for her classic fashion sense which combines smart tailoring with figure-skimming cuts and flattering colours.

Her clothes are of course the most eye-catching feature of her outfits, but the royal also does well to pay attention to detail with her accessories, including her shoes.

One styling trick she has been seen donning on several occasions is pairing statement shoes, specifically two-tone pumps, with bold tonal fabrics.

The 41-year-old’s wardrobe is filled with a mixture of both stiletto and ballet styles of pointed-toe shoes which were popularised by none other than French fashion designer, Gabrielle “Coco” Chanel.

According to Vogue, the Chanel two-tone ballet flats have been “a staple” for those at the top of the fashion industry for decades.

The publication claimed: “Coco Chanel first created her distinctive beige and black sling-backs in 1957, adding the signature contrasting toe cap to give the illusion of longer, slimmer legs.

“The designer is said to have hated her own feet, a hang-up that inspired her to create a shoe that was elegant yet practical.

“The actors Gina Lollobrigida and Romy Schneider were fans of the two-tone style, and new iterations of the classic shoe appear on the Chanel catwalk every season.”

When Kate wears them, however, they aren’t always by Chanel. In fact, the royal prefers designers like Alessandra Rich, from whom she owns two pairs of the “Fab 105 Two-Tone Pumps”. The style is inspired by the classic Chanel sling-backs and is made with a mixture of suede and patent leather.

A similar pair by Jennifer Chamandi, the “Vitorrio 105 Pumps in White/Black” is another monochromatic design loved by the Princess of Wales. The mother-of-three donned the monochrome pair for the Order of the Garter ceremony earlier this year.

She teamed them with a black polka-dot dress by the same designer for a chic two-tonal look.

Kate’s ceremonial ensemble appeared to be inspired by another bright white outfit she wore a year earlier in 2022.  While attending the Royal Charity Polo Cup at Guards Polo Club, Windsor, the Princess donned a smart white tea dress and a pair of two-tone flats by Camilla Elphick.
