Following the shot the commentary team was left in amazement at what they had just witnessed. “Oh, I say, that is absolutely magnificent,” one remarked after the shot. “That is [the] shot of the day right there.
“Good drop shot. Cirstea did well to dig this one out but look at this from Martic, over Cirstea’s head.”
Despite the impressive shot it wasn’t enough to win the match for the 32-year-old. Despite being up a few breaks, Martic would falter. Cirstea went on to advance to the Round of 16 with a 6-3, 7-6 win, ending in a 15-13 tiebreak.
Following the win, tennis fans were quick to react to the tiebreak with both players giving it their all. “Incredible tiebreak between Cirstea and Martic in Washington,” tennis commentator José Morgado remarked.
Others were also left impressed, with one user tweeting: “Wow what a match! Strong tiebreak performance from both Martic and Cirstea. Cirstea prevailing in the end 15-13. Well done!” Another added: “Absolute bonkers from these women ngl.”
Cirstea is set to face Liudmila Samsonova next after the Russian defeated American, Danielle Collins 6-1, 6-3.
