Destroyed infrastructure: floating power plants for Ukraine

Because of Russia’s attacks, millions of people in Ukraine have limited access to electricity and water. Ship power plants from Turkey should now help to supply the country with electricity.

A Turkish company wants to supply Ukraine with electricity via floating power plants. Electricity supplier Karpowership, based in Istanbul, announced that the electricity should be generated on ships with a total output of 500 megawatts. In this way, up to a million households in Ukraine can be supplied. To this end, a declaration of intent has been signed with the state-owned Ukrainian energy company ECU.

Already twelve Russian attacks on power grid

Russia invaded Ukraine a little over 11 months ago. Since October, the Russian army has primarily been attacking critical infrastructure objects with rockets and combat drones. In the middle of winter, Ukrainians therefore have to cope with restrictions on electricity and, in some cases, water and heat supplies.

“Ukraine’s power grid has suffered 12 massive Russian attacks,” the statement quoted ECU CEO Vitaly Butenko as saying. As the war rages on, building new power plants to restore lost or damaged generation capacity is not a viable option. That is why one is dependent on innovative solutions.

Deliveries within a month?

According to the plans, the ship power plants could be located off the coast of Moldova and Romania and feed electricity into the Ukrainian grid from there. According to Karpowership, it could be delivered in 30 days. The power plants on the ships could be operated with liquefied natural gas, oil or biodiesel.

“We want to help Ukraine get the energy it needs as soon as possible,” said Karpowership Chief Commercial Officer Zeynep Harezi. According to the Turkish company, it has a fleet of 36 ship power plants with a total generation capacity of 6,000 megawatts. The utility already supplies various African countries, Brazil and New Caledonia with energy.
