The murder-mystery “Amsterdam” becomes a gigantic cinema flop in North America despite a star cast.

Everyone involved had probably imagined it a little differently. The star-studded murder mystery “Amsterdam” with superstars Margot Robbie (32) and Christian Bale (48) in the lead roles started in North American cinemas last weekend. In the early 1930s, they become involved in the murder of a US senator.

The cinema viewers, however, gave the prestige work, which was traded as a hot Oscar candidate before its release, the cold shoulder: the film only brought in 6.5 million US dollars. On the other hand, there is a massive budget of 80 million dollars. If you add the marketing costs, you will probably end up with a painful financial loss of around 100 million US dollars, as reported by the industry magazine “Deadline”..

The reasons for the failure

The already mentioned budget of 80 million dollars was the biggest nail in the coffin for “Amsterdam”, as “Deadline” puts it. The historical comedy became expensive because the corona lockdown in 2020 delayed the start of shooting and made it necessary to move production from Boston to Los Angeles.

In addition, “Amsterdam” also failed the film critics. On the review collection site Rotten Tomatoes, the work of filmmaker David O. Russell (64, “American Hustle”) is currently (as of October 11) with a miserable average of only 33 percent positive reviews. The older cinema viewers in particular, who form the main target group of “Amsterdam”, still give the most to traditional film reviews by professional reviewers – and stay away from the cinema halls if the ratings are bad.

In Germany, “Amsterdam” will be released in cinemas on November 3rd.
