Anti-apartheid fighter died at 90

South African human rights activist and Nobel Peace Prize winner Desmond Tutu is dead. He reportedly died at the age of 90.
Former South African archbishop and human rights activist Desmond Tutu has died at the age of 90. The news of the death of Tutu, who campaigned against apartheid in his home country throughout his life, was reported by South African President Cyril Ramaphosa (69), according to consistent media reports. “On behalf of all South Africans” he expresses “his deep sorrow over the death” of Desmond Tutu.
Tutu’s mission is to educate the world about the social injustices that a white minority has been inflicting on the black population of South Africa. At the same time, he campaigned for reconciliation between the population groups through non-violent change. In 1984 he was honored with the Nobel Peace Prize for his work, and two years later he was appointed Archbishop of Cape Town.
Lifelong struggle against injustice
From 1995 he also became chairman of the South African Truth and Reconciliation Commission. Tutu also fought for the rights of homosexuals in South Africa and supported, for example, the opening of marriage for same-sex couples.
In 2019, pictures went around the world that showed Tutu together with Prince Harry (37) and Duchess Meghan (40). The two of them had their son Archie with them on their trip to Africa and introduced him to Tutu. The couple referred to on Instagram Tutu at the time as “one of the greatest fighters for equality” who “worked tirelessly against injustice all his life”.
