Design change: Why WhatsApp is suddenly greener

Users of the WhatsApp messenger may have been surprised in recent weeks that the app suddenly appeared with different colors and changed icons. The design updates have now been officially confirmed and explained by WhatsApp.

The focus is on a new green color palette that is used consistently across the apps for iOS and Android. Icons, illustrations and chat backgrounds have also been updated. The bar at the bottom in Android and the bar at the top in iOS also look different. File attachments in iOS have also received a new layout.

Chief designer Idit Yaniv explains in a blog postthat the green shade was selected from 35 different color iterations. At the same time, the use of neutral colors was increased. The dark mode on Android has also been improved at the request of many users.

A new native navigation bar has been added to the Android app to make switching between different functions quicker. New chat filters were recently introduced to help sort messages by groups or unread status.
