A horror sight. Fourteen coffins were desecrated in the Tugéras-Saint-Maurice and Chartuzac cemeteries, two towns located near Jonzac and in Charente-Maritime, overnight from Thursday to Friday, according to information from the Parisian.
After unsealing the vaults, the perpetrators of this sordid act opened the coffins. Bones were found and a body was placed sitting in their coffin. “It’s horrible, it’s despicable… I don’t have the words to describe what I saw,” reacted Pierre Amat, the mayor of Tugéras-Saint-Maurice. Difficult to determine for the time being the motivations of the authors: were they looking for jewels in the tombs?
An ongoing investigation
The neighborhood did not hear any noise. The prosecutor of Saintes confirmed the opening of an investigation entrusted to the gendarmerie of Jonzac for “desecration of graves and attack on the aggravated integrity of corpses”. Facts punishable by 2 years of imprisonment.
