After the attack on Derek Chauvin in a US prison, more details are now known. According to court documents, a fellow inmate stabbed the ex-police officer, who was sentenced to a long prison sentence for the murder of African-American George Floyd, more than 20 times.
About a week ago, Derek Chauvin was stabbed to death in a prison in Tucson, Arizona. The former police officer, who is serving a long prison sentence there for the murder of African-American George Floyd, was seriously injured by a fellow prisoner. As the Associated Press news agency reported, among others, a gang member stabbed the 47-year-old 22 times in the prison library with an improvised knife. The 52-year-old told prison guards that he would have killed Chauvin if he had not been stopped, a court document said. Prison guards subdued the attacker with pepper spray.
He also later said he had been thinking about attacking Chauvin for a month because he was a prominent prison inmate. However, he denied any intention to kill. He chose “Black Friday” as the day of the crime for symbolic reasons in connection with the Black Lives Matter movement, which received widespread support after Floyd’s murder in 2020.

Charges of attempted murder were brought against the attacker. The 52-year-old faces 20 additional years in prison in the case. He is also said to have stabbed another inmate more than 20 times. After the crime, he was transferred to an adjacent federal prison. Nothing is currently known about Chauvin’s condition.
George Floyd died in a brutal police operation in Minneapolis in May 2020. Videos documented how police officers pushed the unarmed man to the ground. The white officer Derek Chauvin pressed his knee well on Floyd’s neck for nine minutes, while he begged to let him breathe. The case led to nationwide protests against police violence and racism. Chauvin was later charged with murder more than two decades in prison sentenced.
