In “The Passport” the investigators are once again on the hunt for a grisly murderer of women. Can the sequel build on the award-winning first season?

The eagerly awaited second season of the series “Der Pass” (2019) starts on Friday (January 21) on Sky. What are the eight new episodes about and whether the sequel can build on the quality of the award-winning first season? The answers are here:

You should know that from the first season “The Passport”.

In the first season, the cruel and highly intelligent Krampus killer Gregor Ansbach (Franz Hartwig, born 1986) kept the German-Austrian investigative team, led by Ellie Stocker (Julia Jentsch, 43) and Gedeon Winter (Nicholas Ofczarek, 50), in suspense . Both are played badly, especially at the end of the series. So Stocker falls into the clutches of the Krampus killer, who sneaks into her life as a supposedly harmless neighbor and tries to poison her. But Winter can save her.

In the final scene of the first season, which was awarded the Grimme Prize, the Golden Camera, Romy and the German Television Prize, an unknown motorcyclist shoots at Inspector Winter. It is hard to imagine that the policeman would survive…

That’s what season two is about

But two years later it is clear: Gedeon Winter was seriously injured but survived. After the coma he fights his way back to life with difficulty. He is not yet allowed to go back to work, but he can support the young, ambitious police colleague Yela Antic (Franziska von Harsdorf, 25) in an advisory capacity. Ellie Stocker is also severely traumatized and has to take a break.

Meanwhile, the battered team and colleagues have to stop a murderer of women. Unlike the first “Pass” season, this time viewers know from episode one that the son of a powerful family becomes a murderer while his older brother goes to extremes to protect him and their family…

Tried and tested team and newcomers in front of and behind the camera

“Fascinating characters, elaborate sets and unusual locations in an archaic landscape are also the starting point for a nerve-wracking murder hunt when shooting the second season,” the broadcaster promised in advance. The fact that this was successful is mainly due to the creative team behind the camera of the Sky Original production: the directors and screenwriters Cyrill Boss (47) and Philipp Stennert (46) are again responsible for the new episodes. Cameraman Philip Peschlow (born 1978) once again delivered the impressive images. The handwriting of the three is unmistakable in the continuation of the crime series with thriller elements.

In addition to von Harsdorf, the two Austrian actors Dominic Marcus Singer (born 1993) as the murderer Alexander Gössen and Christoph Luser (born 1980) as his older brother Wolfgang are new to the cast. In general, the entire cast is very well cast down to the smallest supporting role.

A completely different type of criminal

The fact that, despite the many parallels, no warmed-up recipe for success is served is mainly due to the type of murderer. “We tell a completely new type of perpetrator who, following his pathological instincts, becomes a murderer and acts from a milieu in which the powerful are convinced that they themselves determine the rules that apply to them,” explained Quirin Schmidt, Executive Producer Sky, to.

And policeman Winter also makes the difference clear in one scene when he compares the Krampus killer Gregor Ansbach (season 1) with the new serial killer: “Ansbach has used every opportunity to put himself in the limelight. He is constantly in contact with the press , sent audio messages and in the end we were very lucky to catch him… Yours, he doesn’t even want to be seen. He’s just doing it for himself… There are no parallels.”

Will the fans’ high expectations be met?

It’s a worthy sequel. In “The Passport” a thick, blood-red thread is woven from an unbelievable number of individual strands that are staged in great detail. Everything gradually makes sense, no matter how surprising it may seem at first. The individual episodes and the entire series are extremely varied and exciting right up to the end – which is significantly enhanced by the music. They already showed in season one that the screenwriters are real cliffhanger kings, and season two is in no way inferior.
