After the Koran burnings in Denmark and Sweden, the authorities tightened border controls in Denmark. According to the domestic intelligence service, the security situation no longer makes the stronger controls necessary.

Denmark is relaxing its border controls again after they were tightened three weeks ago because of Koran burnings. This was announced by the Danish police. The domestic intelligence service PET is of the opinion that the current security situation no longer makes it necessary to continue the measure.

As of today, controls at the Danish borders will be the same as before August 3rd. At the state and sea border with Germany, random checks are carried out. There are no border controls at the border with Sweden and on ferries from Norway.

Increased danger from Koran burnings

Because copies of the Koran were repeatedly burned in Sweden and Denmark, there have been angry protests in Muslim countries, diplomatic trouble and threats from abroad in recent weeks. Sweden last week raised its terror alert level to level 4 from 5 for the first time since 2016 due to the increased risk of attacks. The second-highest level means that the authorities believe there is a concrete threat to the country and the likelihood that actors have the intent and ability to carry out attacks is high.

In both countries, the authorities are considering ways to restrict the organization of demonstrations involving the burning of the Koran. At the same time, however, freedom of expression should be respected.
