Demos against right-wing extremism: What follows the protest? – Culture

It is not automatic that the AfD is becoming stronger in the East. But it takes more than demonstrations to break the dynamic.

The demonstrations against the AfD and for the protection of democracy have reached the East German medium-sized and small towns. In Greiz and Grimma, Altenburg and Aschersleben. Anyone who takes to the streets there literally shows their face and, unlike in metropolises like Berlin, Frankfurt or Hamburg, risks social ostracism, hostility, threats, perhaps even slashed tires or broken windows. Those who are committed to democracy locally have long been under pressure when they take a position. Teacher, mayor, pastor, parent representative or West German socialized doctor: they share the experience that anyone who openly opposes the AfD and right-wing extremism will find it uncomfortable.
