Democracy, new technologies and crisis of confidence… Yes, fact checking is useful

Since 2017, with its “Fake off” section, 20 minutes fight against false information. Every day, we try to disentangle the true from the false through many subjects, whether political, economic or related to the environment or digital.

On the occasion of fact-checking day, April 2, journalists from the “Fake off” service wanted to answer the question that is still legitimate to ask today: What is fact-checking still for?

For our four journalists in the section, Emilie Jehanno, Mathilde Cousin, Maïwenn Furic and Lina Fourneau, there are mainly three reasons why fact checking still has its place in the media world today. On the one hand because the practice helps to preserve democracy by fighting against misinformation, sometimes used as a political weapon. On the other hand, because fact checking adapts to new technologies which are becoming more and more efficient. And finally because fact checking helps to strengthen trust in the media by providing accurate, verified and transparent information.
