Decreased consumption in Germany: Less fish is eaten

In view of the high inflation, fewer fish and seafood were eaten in Germany last year. The best-selling fish comes from the Pacific.

Against the background of significantly higher prices, the consumption of fish and seafood in German private households has fallen significantly. Overall, Germans bought 434,413 tons of fish and seafood last year. That was eleven percent less than in the previous year, as the chairwoman of the fish information center, Petra Weigl, said. The Germans paid 4.9 billion euros for this, which corresponds to a minus of nine percent compared to the previous year.

In the second Corona year 2021, Germans had spent more money on fish than ever before. According to the service, a total of almost 5.4 billion euros was paid for 493,325 tons of fish and seafood in food retail. According to the information, almost 12,000 tons more fish were sold in the first Corona year 2020, but at a lower price of 5.3 billion euros.

Baden-Württemberg eats the least fish

The best-selling fish last year was Alaska pollock, which actually belongs to the cod family and lives in the North Pacific – ahead of salmon and tuna. As in the previous year, Germans ate canned fish and frozen goods most frequently, according to the information.

Most fish is eaten in the north of the country. Last year consumption was highest in Bremen – with a per capita consumption of 6.6 kilograms. In Schleswig-Holstein it was 6.5 kilograms, in Hamburg and Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania it was 6.0 kilograms. As in the previous year, the federal state with the lowest fish consumption was Baden-Württemberg, where it was 4.8 kilograms per capita.
