Decline in sales – Germans spend less money on cosmetics – economy

After a series of years of growth, Germany’s cosmetics manufacturers did worse domestic business in 2021. According to projections by the Personal Care and Detergent Association (IKW), consumers in this country are likely to have spent around 18.7 billion euros on shampoo, soap and dishwasher tablets by the end of the year. That would be three percent less than a year earlier. According to information from the association, the industry last recorded a decline in domestic sales in 2013. At that time, revenues fell by 0.2 percent compared to the previous year to around 17.12 billion euros. “In Germany, people bought fewer facial care products, perfumes and decorative cosmetics. And they bought fewer detergents and cleaning agents – they probably still had supplies from the previous year,” said IKW chairman Georg Held. For 2022, however, the association expects sales to increase again by 1.8 percent to a good 19 billion euros.
