Was it the urge to resist the defenders’ previously cautious strategy? Or was it the warning words of the presiding judge, Martin Alberring, that triggered something in them? On the last day of the trial at the Mönchengladbach regional court, Alberring said, referring to the very brief statements made so far by the two defendants: “I found your statement strange.” It was an unusually forceful announcement for a judge, a kind of final warning.
