Jean Maheu, former CEO of Radio France and former director of the Center Pompidou, died Sunday January 9 at the age of 90, announced the public radio group, which pays tribute to a “Man of great culture in love with all the arts”.
Chairman and CEO of Radio France for two terms, from 1989 to 1995, “Jean Maheu marked the history of a house which maintains a carnal link with culture and all its expressions”, underlined the institution in a press release. Sibyle Veil, on behalf of Radio France, sent his condolences to his wife, six children and nine grandchildren.
At the head of major cultural establishments
After graduating from ENA in 1956, Jean Maheu became an auditor at the Court of Auditors before joining the General Secretariat of the Presidency of the Republic as an employee of General de Gaulle (1962-1967), then the Secretary of State in charge of Youth.
In 1974, Jean Maheu embarked on a cultural shift by becoming director of music, lyrical art and dance at the Ministry of Culture, president of the Orchester de Paris and vice-president of the Paris Opera.
He continued his career at the head of major cultural establishments: the Center Pompidou (1983-1989), Radio France, the Théâtre de la Ville, then the Maison de la Poésie de la Ville de Paris (1995-1998). Jean Maheu has also published several collections of poems.
