After two train drivers reported a dead bear on the tracks to the police in the morning, the Salzburg state expert for bears and wolves went to the scene of the accident to take DNA samples. This should clarify the origin of the animal – and whether it has already been recorded in a database.

Animal carcass shows serious injuries

According to the state expert, it is a rather young bear weighing around 100 kilograms, as reported by the ORF. He was seriously injured in the collision with the train, including serious head injuries. The carcass was taken to a cold storage facility where it is expected to be examined. It is planned that the bear will be prepared – for training purposes in hunting training.

Brown bear spotted in Oberallgäu

Most recently, a bear was sighted in Großgmain and Grödig near the border with Bavaria in the state of Salzburg.

There had also recently been several sightings in Upper Bavaria. Now a bear has also been found much further west in the Allgäu. In the district of Oberallgäu, a person photographed the animal on Monday in the area of ​​the Hinterstein valley near Bad Hindelang, the district office in Sonthofen announced. The State Office for the Environment (LfU) checked the picture and announced in the evening that a brown bear could be seen on the motif.

According to the LfU, the closest bear population from Bavaria lives in the northern Italian province of Trentino, about 120 kilometers as the crow flies from the southernmost part of Bavaria.
