When the nominations for the Leipzig Book Fair Prize were announced in April, an open letter criticized the fact that there were “no black authors or authors of color” among the nominees. If you mean the melanin content of human skin by “white”, then the statement that only “white authors” were nominated is correct. But that is not the concept of “whiteness” that applies in the anti-racist left, to which many of the signatories of the letter belong. Here “white” is not a skin color.
