Emotions ran rampant with David Alaba in Real Madrid’s 3-1 win over Paris St.-Germain. The Austrian had to let out his joy in a folding chair.

Real Madrid celebrated another spectacular success in the Champions League on Wednesday night. Los Blancos lost 1-0 in the first leg against Paris St-Germain in the round of 16 but put in a strong performance in the second leg at their home Bernabeu. In the end, Real prevailed 3-1 in a dramatic match – after another 0-1 victory. Striker Karim Benzema secured his team progress with a hat-trick.

So it’s no wonder that emotions ran high among players and fans alike. When Benzema made it 3-1 with his third goal in the 78th minute and thus made the decision, all the dams broke in Madrid. While the French goalscorer closed his eyes and stretched his arms, David Alaba enjoyed an unusual object: the former Bayern player raised a chair.

“Don’t sit on our chair,” the Austrian later commented on the scene on his Twitter account. Apparently he somehow had to live out his emotions in the triumphal frenzy. His jubilation had already caused amusement on the Internet during the game – because although Alaba could only be seen in the TV picture in the background, his exuberant joy had not escaped the viewers.

One user described Alaba’s jubilation as the “true highlight” of the game at the Bernabeu, others felt reminded of a scene from the film “Manitu’s Shoe” with Bully Herbig, in which the Shoshone dig up the folding chair. There were also associations with wrestling, where folding chairs are always used for wild fights.

By defeating Paris St-Germain, Real Madrid took a step towards their next Champions League title win and eliminated a strong contender. In the quarterfinals, which will be drawn next Friday, the royals could also meet Bayern Munich – Alaba’s former club, which he left for Madrid on a free transfer in the summer. A Bayern fan tweeted that the folding chair was “the only thing you, dear David Alaba, will be lifting up this year in the Champions League”.
