Meta sued for 550 million euros in damages
Mark Zuckerberg’s technology company is repeatedly confronted with the judiciary, this time AMI is suing. The Spanish media association is demanding damages of 550 million euros.
As various resolutions from the European authorities show, Mark Zuckerberg’s technology company has “repeatedly violated EU data protection rules and ignored the legal requirement that citizens consent to the use of their data for the creation of advertising profiles.” As a result, the media involved in the lawsuit suffered advertising losses amounting to the amount of compensation demanded.
AMI President José Joly said behavior like Meta’s endangers “the survival of media that is fundamental to the democratic quality of a country.” We therefore call on Spanish public and private companies to assign their advertising campaigns to “safe, reliable and responsible media” that “respect the rights of citizens and promote the quality of democracy in Spain, in accordance with theirs Politics of social responsibility”.
Meta has already had trouble with the judiciary on several occasions. The Irish data protection authority DPC imposed a record fine of 1.2 billion euros on the internet giant in May for violating the European General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). A lawsuit filed by 41 US states in October caused quite a stir, accusing Meta of endangering the mental and physical health of children and young people.
