Dark mood in Ukraine: Imagine it’s war and nobody wants to go there anymore

More than a year and a half after the start of the Russian invasion, war weariness is growing in Ukraine – and criticism of Prime Minister Volodymyr Zelenskyj. Our reporter is traveling in the west of the country. In overcrowded cemeteries – and among mothers who fear the death of their sons.

A light drizzle falls from the dark sky on this November evening in the city of Uzhhorod, in the far west of Ukraine on the border with Slovakia. But in a backyard, between prefabricated buildings, pensioner Tetjana Paschko and a handful of neighbors are weaving white ribbons into a camouflage net that they have strung up on a carpet pole.

Nets that are urgently needed by the soldiers at the front to protect themselves, tanks and guns from being discovered now that the leaves have fallen from the trees.
