Pearl Jam have recorded a new album, which is great news – and a bit scary. With every announcement, the anticipation of new music by old heroes and the fear of it creep in until the release. “Great” in the indecisive balancing act between “Great!” and “Great.” The enthusiasm and disillusionment of this band can be explained by a development curve like that of many legends: the last surviving grungers, in the literal sense of the word, released two or three outstanding records in the early 1990s, but after that they were actually only okay at best. Okay enough for the fans not to let go. But also too much just okay to be seriously gripped.
