Queen Margrethe II has undergone extensive back surgery at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen. Recently, the situation has deteriorated, which is why the operation was necessary.

Denmark’s Queen Margrethe II has undergone a planned operation on her back. The major surgery on Wednesday at Rigshospitalet in Copenhagen went according to plan and the Queen’s condition was “good and stable,” the palace said. The 82-year-old monarch has been suffering from back pain for a long time, but recently it has gotten worse. “The operation went according to plan, the condition of the queen is good and stable given the circumstances,” said a statement from the royal family, which included: at Instagram has been published. After consulting specialists, the monarch decided to “undergo extensive surgery” due to ongoing problems. It was already the second back operation for Margrethe II. 20 years ago she had an operation on the lumbar spine.

Margrethe II has been on the Danish throne for 51 years. It is extremely popular, with more than 80 percent of Danes describing themselves as supporters of the monarchy. The queen, who has been a widow since 2018, says she is not thinking of abdicating. “I’ll stay on the throne until I fall over,” assured the passionate smoker once.
