After his convincing victory against his compatriot Andrey Rublev when he entered the fray (6-4, 6-2), Daniil Medvedev once again demonstrated impressive mastery. Always fair, the Russian won this Wednesday in Turin against Alexander Zverev (7-6 [7], 6-4). Undefeated and alone at the head of the red group, the Russian is the first to qualify for the semi-finals.
In the wake of their last two clashes, won by Medvedev, the Russian quickly gained the upper hand, directly pushing the German to make a mistake. Author of two unforced errors, he was broken from the start (0-1). Although he couldn’t imagine a worse start, Zverev still managed to quickly raise his level of play. Less precise and less aggressive, the world number three lost his serve in the middle of the first set (3-3).
Zverev wastes two set points and breaks down
From then on, the two men engaged in a tough battle which forced them to decide in the tie-break. While he had the opportunity to pocket the first set, the German collected two set points (at 6-5 and 7-6 in the tie-break). For his part, Medvedev did not miss his first opportunity and won the set, after 1 hour 4 minutes of play.
Close to smashing his racket to pieces, the 2020 US Open finalist pulled himself together, even managing to score a break point at 4-4. But he wasted the opportunity to put pressure on his opponent by being guilty of a gross, fatal mistake. Medvedev took the opportunity to break it in the next game and achieve a third success in a row against the German.
To hope to reach the semi-finals, Zverev will have to win on Friday against Andrey Rublev, already eliminated after his defeat against Carlos Alcaraz.
