Danièle Obono describes Hamas as a “resistance movement”, Gérald Darmanin takes legal action for “apology of terrorism”

Danièle Obono’s turn to fuel the controversy. While many voices have been raised in recent days to condemn the refusal of Jean-Luc Mélenchon and his inner circle to qualify Hamas as “terrorist”following her murderous attack against Israel, the MP (La France insoumise, LFI) from Paris made comments on Tuesday, October 17, which revived strong criticism against the “rebellious”.

Pushed several times by journalist Jean-Jacques Bourdin, on the air of Sud Radio, to say whether Hamas, which carried out massacres in Israel on October 7, is “a resistance movement”this member of LFI management ended up responding: ” Yes “. “It’s a resistance movement that defines itself as such”, she said. For Danièle Obono, “it is an Islamist political group which has an armed branch”, “is part of Palestinian political groups”, “aims the liberation of Palestine” and that “resists occupation”.

“Hamas, “a resistance movement”? No ! It’s a terrorist movement.”, reacted the Minister of the Interior, Gérald Darmanin, on the X platform, two hours later. Before announcing that he was referring the matter to the public prosecutor “for apologizing for terrorism” against Danièle Obono. The Elysée approves the minister’s initiative, the executive wanting to “intractable with anything that puts acts of violence into perspective”.

The statements of this close friend of Jean-Luc Mélenchon were also strongly denounced by Elisabeth Borne. Tuesday, in the National Assembly, the Prime Minister accused LFI of “exclude oneself from the republican field” by refusing to characterize Hamas as “terrorist” or considering it as a “resistance movement”.

If the right and the extreme right have in turn condemned the remarks of Danièle Obono – the president of the Les Républicains party, Eric Ciotti, indicating in particular that he had contacted the office of the National Assembly “to request sanctions and the lifting of parliamentary immunity” of the MP – the left also reacted strongly. Because it is precisely because Mr. Mélenchon and those close to him have refused for ten days to qualify Hamas as “terrorist” that the New Ecological and Social Popular Union (Nupes) is about to break up.

Some “rebels” dissociate themselves from Danièle Obono

“Okay now that’s enough. What happened on Saturday October 7 in Israel had nothing to do with “resistance””the head of environmentalists, Marine Tondelier, fumed on X. “These scandalous statements make our positions invisible and inaudible (…). I’m angry », added the first secretary of the Socialist Party (PS), Olivier Faure. For his part, the PS deputy for Essonne Jérôme Guedj castigated comments “revulsive”.
