Was it reckless? Ex-RAF terrorist Daniela Klette has had a Facebook profile for more than ten years. A “like” thumb was something of a prophecy.

Anyone who lives underground should not leave any traces – this is a basic rule Daniela Klette apparently neglected after decades on the run. The now arrested ex-RAF terrorist had been running a Facebook account since at least 2011, revealing details from her life and even photos of herself to a worldwide public. The verification team from star and RTL has checked the profile as far as possible. It is unclear to what extent the 65-year-old’s social media presence helped investigators get on her trail. But the profile gives an insight into Klette’s life – which didn’t seem to take place underground at all.

Daniela Klette’s hobby was Capoeira

The ex-RAF terrorist appears, among other things, on a trip to a river, in sports shoes and with a backpack. In general, she seems to have enjoyed spending time in nature over the past few decades. Her snapshots show a snow-covered meadow, water landscapes, cherry trees, a sandy beach, fly agarics, flowers – innocuous photos.

On the other hand, shots that show Klette’s face seem more careless, some in the company of other people and presumably taken in Latin America. A “Bellingcat” journalist for the ARD podcast “Legion” had already come across the profile that Klette ran under her code name last year using facial recognition software and further research. Several photos show her in a capoeira group. But when the group visited Berlin, the trainer said that he had not known for years where his former participant was now. The podcast team’s trail went nowhere. It is not known whether the authorities followed up on this tip.

Even the publicly visible one Klette’s Facebook profile does not reveal where exactly she has been all these years, but it does provide clues to a connection to the capital. Instead, dozens of announcements of dates for Afro-Brazilian cultural festivals, advertisements for capoeira courses and performances by dance groups. Burdock seems to have found a hobby in Brazilian martial arts. It is unclear whether she last exercised it. The last Capoeira-related Facebook post was published in September 2019. The last post ever appeared around a year ago.

The social media presence could be a small piece of the puzzle for the police to find out where Burdock has been in the past decades. The investigators don’t know that yet – nor who the former RAF woman’s supporters were. What may be more important, however, is that Klette himself testifies. But that too is uncertain. After their arrests, almost all former RAF members adhered to the terrorist group’s credo: “Don’t talk to cops.” So far, Klette has not provided any information about the matter.

Klette has given the “like” thumbs up to more than 30 pages on Facebook, for example for cultural and integration projects, the “Taz”, the Rosa-Luxemburg-Stiftung – all inconspicuously. The ex-RAF terrorist gave a like to the page “Karma fucks everyone, including you.” Klette is now in custody.
