Daniel Brühl has remembered his only meeting with Karl Lagerfeld. This is how the film star impressed the legendary fashion icon.

In just a few months, the German-Spanish film star Daniel Brühl (45) will become fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld (1933-2019) on the Disney+ streaming service. Brühl was now standing at the premiere of the upcoming streaming series “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” as part of the Canneseries Festival in Cannes, France The US industry magazine “Variety” answered questions. In the conversation, the “Good Bye, Lenin!” star remembers, among other things, the only time he met “Kaiser Karl” in person.

This is how Daniel Brühl impressed fashion icon Karl Lagerfeld

Brühl modeled for Lagerfeld “in Berlin, 15 or 20 years ago” together with other actors at a photo shoot. The other actors “behaved like monkeys to get on the cover,” which Brühl found “so embarrassing.” His “Spanish pride” was against such ingratiating behavior.

“So I stepped away and he looked at me and gave me a quick nod,” Brühl recalls, further recalling the events at that time. After nodding his head in agreement, Lagerfeld later “took photos of myself alone” and then asked an employee: “Wasn’t that the guy from ‘Goodbye Lenin’? You have to find me a cinema where I can watch the film with you can.”

The Karl Lagerfeld behind the persona

Following the viewing of the German comedy classic by director Wolfgang Becker (69), Lagerfeld is said to have said about Brühl: “I like this guy.” This anecdote, which the actor said he learned about just a few days ago, gave him “a good feeling. But maybe it was a lie. Who knows? But I want to believe it’s true.”

Daniel Brühl sums up in an interview with “Variety” that he met “the persona” Karl Lagerfeld at the meeting, who was “sharp, eloquent, funny, very charming to me.” In the upcoming biographical series on Disney+, he wanted to “explore who the man was before he became famous.”

“Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” premieres on Disney+ in June

According to his own statement, Brühl also feels “a great responsibility”. The closer the start date of “Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” gets to June 7th, the more the tension increases, “especially for me as a German, because everyone asks me about Karl Lagerfeld.”

The new series on Disney+, behind the French “Lupin” production company Gaumont, is based on the best-selling novel “Kaiser Karl” by Raphaëlle Bacqué. The action begins at the beginning of the 1970s, when a still unknown Karl Lagerfeld initially tries to gain a foothold in Paris. Numerous other historical personalities from the jet set of the time such as Andy Warhol (1928-1987), Paloma Picasso (74) and Marlene Dietrich (1901-1992) also appear in the six-part streaming series.
