According to the release, the series begins in 1972, when Karl Lagerfeld is 38 years old, not yet sporting his iconic hairstyle, and working as a little-known fashion designer for ready-to-wear. “After meeting and falling in love with the spirited Jacques de Bascher (Théodore Pellerin), an ambitious and tempestuous young dandy, the most mysterious of couturiers dares to take on his friend (and rival) Yves Saint Laurent (Arnaud Valois)” , it continues. Saint Laurent is a genius of haute couture who is supported by the feared businessman Pierre Bergé (Alex Lutz).

“Becoming Karl Lagerfeld” will revolve around Lagerfeld’s impressive development “into a complex and iconic figure of Parisian couture, who is already gripped by the ambition to become emperor of fashion.” The story of the fashion designer before he became the world-famous Karl Lagerfeld is based on the best-selling novel “Kaiser Karl” by Raphaëlle Bacqué.
The series will also show personalities from fashion and culture who were in contact with Karl Lagerfeld at the time. Jeanne Damas plays Paloma Picasso, Marlene Dietrich is portrayed by Sunnyi Melles and Andy Warhol is portrayed by Paul Spera. Actress Lisa Kreuzer can also be seen as Karl’s mother Elisabeth Lagerfeld.
Jared Leto also plays Karl Lagerfeld
Daniel Brühl is not the only actor allowed to portray Karl Lagerfeld. Hollywood star Jared Leto (52) is also set to star as the famous fashion designer in a biopic he co-produced.
