Unfortunately, now it’s official what many of his followers – and everyone who ever heard him became one – expected, although they hoped for the opposite: the conductor, pianist and tireless campaigner for reconciliation between Jews and Palestinians Daniel Barenboim gives up his managerial position as General Music Director of the Berlin State Opera Unter den Linden, which he has shaped since 1992: “Unfortunately, my health has deteriorated significantly in the last year. I can no longer perform the work that is rightly demanded of a General Music Director … That’s why I ask for your understanding that I will give up this job on January 31, 2023.”
