After an accident involving several trucks, Autobahn 2 between Theeßen and Burg-Ost is closed in both directions. Dangerous goods are burning at the scene of the accident. There is a risk of explosion. The Jerichower Land integrated operations control center has issued a hazard notification.
The Autobahn 2 near Burg in Jerichower Land is closed in both directions. According to the highway police, the reason is a serious accident involving three trucks between Theeßen and Burg-Ost. Among the vehicles involved is a dangerous goods transporter whose cargo caught fire. From the MDR traffic center it was said that eyewitnesses had reported at least one explosion. According to authorities, motorists around the accident site had to be evacuated to be safe from flying material.
In the meantime, the district of Jerichower Land has issued a danger notification. Within a radius of one kilometer around the accident site on the A2, residents should keep windows and doors closed and turn off ventilation and air conditioning.
A truck is said to have loaded formaldehyde
According to the fire brigade control center in Jerichower Land, one of the trucks had loaded formaldehyde. This substance is mainly used to make products durable. In addition, formaldehyde is used as an adhesive, for example for furniture, interior design and prefabricated construction, and for cleaning agents. It is considered carcinogenic and can form explosive mixtures with air.
According to reports from the police, a truck driver has apparently overlooked the end of a traffic jam. Several trucks caught fire as a result of the rear-end collision. Then several gas bottles exploded. Police have not yet released any information about possible injuries. Because the extinguishing work is still ongoing, the emergency services cannot get any closer to the scene of the accident. Traffic will be diverted from the freeway in both directions.
