Danes are snowed in at Ikea – Panorama

In the days leading up to Christmas, not only does winter break into the adult world, but also a trend that was previously known to be in good hands with teenagers: the spontaneous overnight party. At the beginning of the week, a few dozen concert-goers and their Oasis cover band let themselves be snowed in a pub in the north of England, and on Thursday night 30 Danes did the same in the north of Jutland: They spent the night at the local Ikea while outside in and around Aalborg a blizzard raged.

It remains to be seen whether the fallen 20 to 30 centimeters really prevented those trapped from going home. In any case, 300 passengers stayed at the local airport at the same time. In the furniture store, customers and employees found a place of maximum comfort in the staff canteen, whereby the production of the latter is known to be a Danish primary virtue. Branch manager Peter Elmose reported a “fantastic atmosphere” on his mobile phone when he switched live to the TV2 and DR channels: people watched football, drank cocoa and feasted on cinnamon rolls and risalamande, the creamy Danish Christmas almond milk rice. Almost like in an Ikea commercial, with Elmose credibly assuring him that it hadn’t even crossed his mind.

Shortly after midnight, everyone dragged themselves tired and full to the bedroom exhibition and sank contentedly into the beds Malm and Björksnäs, in Espener and Slattum. “Everyone could find exactly the model that they always wanted to try out,” said the branch manager proudly, but hurried to add that the beds had all been freshly made on Thursday morning. Probably in secret anticipation of the next snow storm.
