The car company Daimler has informed its customers about a massive recall campaign. Around 850,000 Mercedes models worldwide could have a defective coolant pump. First repairs will probably be possible from the end of the month.

The German car maker Daimler has to recall hundreds of thousands of vehicles due to technical problems. The problems are apparently caused by a leaky coolant pump. Coolant liquid could get into the exhaust gas recirculation and lead to increased temperatures. A fire hazard cannot be ruled out either. Problems with the coolant pump had already led to a recall campaign at Mercedes’ competitor BMW in the past.

Daimler diesel models affected

According to a company spokesman, the recall applies to models that are powered by a four- or six-cylinder diesel engine. This applies to Mercedes SUVs GLE, GLS, GLC and the G-Class as well as to the C-, E- and S-Class. According to the Federal Motor Transport Authority in Flensburg, around 850,000 cars built between 2017 and 2021 are affected by the recall. In Germany, around 240,000 vehicles are at risk of fire and will have to go to the workshop in the next few weeks. The number has not yet been confirmed by Daimler.

Mercedes had already contacted the affected customers in the past few days. The group announced that a switch valve in the area around the coolant pump must be replaced. In addition, a software update must be installed. According to the daily newspaper “Bild”, however, there is currently a lack of spare parts, which means that repairs are delayed for some time. No workshop appointments could be made immediately.

The first repairs will then probably only take place in the middle or end of January. Until then, Mercedes calls on its customers that affected vehicles “are driven particularly carefully and use is limited to the minimum necessary”.
