The Thuringian CDU politician and former presidential candidate Dagmar Schipanski is dead. She died at the age of 79, as the federal CDU announced on Friday. Schipanski already had a career as a scientist in the GDR before she also got involved in politics after the reunification and applied for the office of Federal President in 1999 and became Minister of Science in Thuringia.

Reunification as a heart issue

In this context, she repeatedly campaigned for the completion of German reunification, a topic that was always close to her heart. Never with the raised index finger, but rather focused on dialogue and rapprochement. Schipanski was a member of the German Akemedie der Naturforscher Leopoldina and volunteered as President of the German Cancer Aid.
