The double attack which killed at least 73 people, including 13 American soldiers, on Thursday, was claimed by the jihadist group Islamic State Khorasan Province. Daesh’s branch in Afghanistan was seen as a growing threat to civilians evacuated from Kabul airport before the end of the US withdrawal, which is due to end on August 31. The group, which formed in 2014 and hates the Taliban, has been responsible for numerous bloody attacks in the region in recent years. This is the first major crisis – excluding Covid – of his mandate. After the double suicide attack claimed by the Afghan branch of Daesh (IS in Khorasan, or Isis-K in English), which killed dozens, including at least 13 American soldiers, Joe Biden promised to “hunt down the terrorists” and to continue the evacuations until August 31. But while there are only five days left before the deadline for the American withdrawal, he ruled out deploying additional forces, specifying that the American General Staff had not requested it.
