Ludwig Holze from Dachau has been a firefighter for almost half a century. A few days ago, the 65-year-old handed in his beeper. To this day, he cannot forget a mission on the Amper in which a comrade died

Ludwig Holze has to give up his honorary post as a firefighter. The reason for this: A few days ago, the man from Dachau celebrated his 65th birthday – that is the upper age limit for active fire service in Bavaria. It was not until 2016 that the Bavarian Council of Ministers raised the age limit for active firefighters from 63 to 65. Only in a few federal states such as Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania and North Rhine-Westphalia is the upper age limit higher, i.e. 67 years.
