The triad does not work in German, which also has a triad of meanings in French: Ci-git l’amer is on the title of the French edition. The first two words clarify the context, because something like that is only written on a tombstone. But at what grave are we standing? Who or what is to be buried? If you pronounce it, can l’amer – the bitter – also fit other spellings and consequently take on other meanings. It is possible that the bitterness is not buried, but rather la mère, the mother, or even the sea – la mer. It is phonetically indistinguishable and is suitable, for example, for a pun among psychiatrists: What is there to bury – the bitterness, the longing for the sea or the mother?
