There is a serious mass fall during the Tour of the Basque Country. Several professional cyclists are injured. Now there is a diagnosis for Tour de France winner Jonas Vingegaard.

Danish cycling star Jonas Vingegaard did not suffer any life-threatening injuries from his terrible fall on the Tour of the Basque Country suffered injuries. As his racing team Visma-Lease a Bike announced, the two-time Tour de France winner suffered a broken collarbone and several broken ribs.

The 27-year-old will remain in the hospital for safety reasons. “It was a bad accident, but fortunately he is stable and conscious,” his team said via X, the former Twitter.

Vingegaard and the two stars Remco Evenepoel and Primoz Roglic were involved in a dramatic crash on the 4th stage of the Tour of the Basque Country. Several drivers fell in a right-hand bend around 35 kilometers from the finish in Legutio and slipped into a concrete ditch. The Dane lay motionless on the ground for a long time and was finally carried away on a stretcher in an ambulance.

Around a dozen other riders crashed

The Belgian time trial world champion Evenepoel was holding his collarbone, the Slovenian Roglic from the German Bora-hansgrohe team was limping on the road after the crash. He was taken away from the scene of the accident in a team vehicle and waved at the TV camera. Natnael Tesfatsion from Eritrea was the first rider to slip, then around a dozen other riders fell. The Eritrean was also taken to a hospital. Nothing was initially known about the severity of the injuries.

The race was subsequently neutralized. The remaining peloton was given the freedom to fight for the stage win. However, this had no influence on the overall ranking. The South African Luis Meintjes secured the stage success, which was insignificant for the ranking.

Roglic, who is wearing the overall leader’s yellow jersey, was involved in a violent crash on the third stage just the day before. But he went back to the start bandaged. The Tour of the Basque Country, which ends on Saturday in Eibar, is seen by Vingegaard and Co. as a preparation race for the Tour de France in the summer.
