Cycling champion Peter Sagan sentenced for driving his scooter drunk

The cycling champion Peter Sagan was not at his first attempt with the Monegasque justice. In 2021, he had been fined 5,000 euros for having defied the curfew linked to the pandemic and injured a police officer in an already alcoholic context.

The Slovak, who has been living in the Principality for several years, has just been given a three-month suspended prison sentence this time for riding his scooter in an advanced state of intoxication, in the middle of the day, reveals Monaco-Morning. The news falls very badly for Sagan (TotalEnergies) just three days before the start of the Tour de France, the last for the 33-year-old rider.

“Riskful, even dangerous behavior”

The facts date back to May 12, 2023, in the Fontvieille district, west of Monaco. “It was 11:35 a.m. when the police noticed the risky, even dangerous, behavior of a driver”, details the president of the court, quoted by the daily, who judged the Slovak in his absence. The time challenges, the alcohol level also noted: 1.46 milligrams per liter of exhaled air, when the limit is set at 0.25 milligrams per liter.

The multiple world champion, several times green jersey on the Great Loop, then explained that he had gone to bed at 3 a.m. after having frequented several night establishments. According to his lawyer, Peter Sagan, who had just returned from a trip to the United States, was in “a state of fatigue linked mainly to jet lag” and “did not think he had such a rate”.

The Monaco Criminal Court followed the prosecutor’s requisitions on the suspended prison sentence requested, and also sentenced the cyclist to a three-month suspension of his driving license.
