Cycling activists are calling for faster implementation of the cycling decision – Munich

This Wednesday, the city council’s mobility committee is expected to decide on new measures to implement the cycling decision. As a reminder: in 2019, the initiators collected 160,000 signatures in order to significantly improve the situation for cyclists. The city council then adopted these goals without there being a referendum. Now, more than four and a half years later, the initiative is criticizing the “slow implementation” and called for faster and consistent action with a small demonstration in front of the town hall on Monday.

The initiators list ten measures that have already been planned but have not yet been decided on for implementation. Sections of the following streets are affected: Schwanthalerstraße, Dachauer Straße/Wintrichring intersection, Lindwurmstraße, Ungererstraße Süd, Ridlerstraße, Stiglmaierplatz, Werinher-, Englschalkinger-, Truderinger- and Pilgersheimer Straße.

Some of these projects are also in the Submission from the mobility department listed because they need to be replanned again. However, they should be presented to the city council this year. Advance solutions with marked bicycle lanes are planned for three measures (Gebsattelstrasse, Schwanthalerstrasse and Arnulfstrasse).

Andreas Schön, Munich chairman of the ADFC cycling club and spokesman for the cycling decision, welcomes the proposal, but misses a central traffic axis where, from the cyclists’ point of view, there is a great need for action: Lindwurmstrasse. The footpaths and cycle paths there are so narrow that dangerous situations arise again and again. In the summer of 2023, the mobility department presented a plan that only provides for one car lane in each direction, but instead provides wide pedestrian and cycle paths. This plan is currently still being coordinated with various interest groups. Whether this will actually happen will be decided this year. Exactly when is still unclear.
