Lots of glitter, make-up and colorful costumes: Carnival in the Brazilian city of Rio de Janeiro has begun. A total of seven million people are expected in the city.

The world famous carnival Rio de Janeiro is officially open. Mayor Eduardo Paes traditionally handed over the glittering city key to “King Momo”, the symbolic figure of the carnival, in the city palace, thus ushering in the colorful hustle and bustle at Sugarloaf Mountain. “Carnival 2024 will be a grandiose event with the whole world looking at Rio,” said Paes.

At the street carnival in the coming days, dozens of carnival groups – the so-called blocos – will parade through the streets of the districts to create atmosphere. The city administration approved 453 moves this season. The best samba groups show off their skills in the Sambodrome. Tribünenstrasse – built by the famous Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer – is also celebrating its 40th anniversary this year. Tens of thousands of spectators in the stands and millions watching on television in Brazil and around the world usually watch the parades.

Rio’s city government estimates that the carnival will generate an economic turnover of five billion reais (about 934 million euros) – from services directly or indirectly linked to the celebrations. A total of seven million people are expected in the city.
