Even before the last performance, actors who were no longer performing were sitting at the hairdresser’s. The actors have had a hairdressing ban since Ash Wednesday 2021. For the final applause on Sunday, all participants crowded onto the stage again. This performance marked the end of the Oberammergau Passion Play 2022. “It’s done,” said director Christian Stückl, visibly touched. Around 412,000 people have seen the 100 performances since May. Following an almost 400-year tradition, 1700 people from Oberammergau took part in the world-famous amateur play about the suffering, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. He was “glad it’s over now,” said Stückl. Because of the pandemic, he had to postpone Passion 2020 by two years. But again this year, players with Corona were absent, roles were hastily reassigned. In the end, a good 91 percent of the tickets were sold. Preparations for the Passion in 2030 will begin in just two years. It is unclear whether Stückl will be ready again – there are also many unanswered questions for him as to how things will continue, says the 60-year-old.
