Curious: meter-high letters in the sand: the bride sees the application from the plane

Love is in the air: Bridget Byrne must have felt like in seventh heaven when landing on the Scottish island of Barra. “Bridget, do you want to marry me,” read the 42-year-old, completely surprised, looking out of the plane window. After consultation with Byrne’s partner Stephen McCann (50), airport employees and firefighters wrote the meter-high letters in the sand of the runway, as the airline Loganair announced on Thursday. While still on the plane, the bride said “yes” – to the relief of the groom and other passengers.

The trip was a gift from Byrne to her partner for his 50th birthday. But McCann turned the tables and secretly discussed his application with the airline Loganair and the small airport on the island of the Outer Hebrides.

“Ultimately we had to rely on Mother Nature as a high tide could easily wash away the writing in the sand,” McCann said, according to the release. “I was really stressed, but shortly before takeoff I got confirmation that the message was in place, the pilots were informed – and off we went.”

After all, it couldn’t have gone better. “Bridget got the surprise of her life looking out the window, so much so that she almost forgot to say ‘yes’.” Upon landing, the husband-to-be then formally knelt and placed a ring on his fiancé.
