Markus Söder spoke of “Bavarian delicacies” when he appeared in front of the press on Monday after the CSU board meeting. What is meant is not the buttery pretzels in the state leadership, but what the committee had previously decided on: a “Bavaria agenda” for the European elections, which Söder and CSU top candidate Manfred Weber are presenting. Limitation of migration, impulses for innovation and prosperity, appreciation for agriculture, reduction of bureaucracy – the surprise effect is limited in the paper. Söder’s thesis that the CSU is “on the way to becoming the coolest party” is already attracting attention among young people, who will be allowed to vote in June this time at the age of 16. He diagnoses a combination of “substance” and “a certain lightness” in his own ranks.
