If Markus Söder were to raise his eyes in the imperial hall of the Munich residence, he would only see stucco and gold and magnificent frescoes. The Bayernbund is celebrating its centenary, a homeland club that has cut its monarchist roots, at least most of them. A marching band plays, the chamois beards bob in the audience. It is “very short”, says a person wearing a felt jacket on stage. Which is a bit funny because he’s just greeted 38 guests, all by name. Warm greetings, great honor, for minutes. Then, finally, Söder enters. “As beautiful as the Prussian buildings in Berlin are,” says the Prime Minister. “But the Bavarian beauty”: unbeatable.
