Crooks cheat seniors for large sums of money – Bavaria

Fraudsters have stolen several hundred thousand euros from senior citizens in Augsburg. The city area was inundated by a wave of fraudulent calls on Wednesday, police said on Thursday. In the Göggingen district, scammers pretended to an 84-year-old on the phone that his son-in-law had caused an accident and now had to post a bail of 50,000 euros in order to be released. After a long phone call with the fraudster, the senior handed over the required cash deposit to an unknown man in the entrance area. Using a similar scam, callers tricked an 80-year-old woman into handing over jewelry and other items worth around €150,000 to bogus police officers. A 74-year-old also lost a five-digit sum to the crooks.
