Critics of the debt brake abuse the flood in Lower Saxony – opinion

It would be pure cynicism and certainly extremely unfair if one or two Berlin traffic light politicians were to be assumed to be just in time for the flooding in parts of Germany. What is striking, however, is how eagerly some coalition members spread statements during the actually quiet time around the turn of the year in which, in view of the recent flood damage in Lower Saxony, for example, they call for the debt brake enshrined in the Basic Law to be suspended again. This raises the suspicion that someone here was just waiting for the first opportunity of the year to consign the hated credit limit to the trash heap of history once and for all.
