Robert Schumann, himself a literary talent of the highest degree, has in the songs based on poems by Joseph von Eichendorff, Heinrich Heine, Nikolaus Lenau, Hans Christian Andersen, Friedrich Rückert and others, which the song duo Christian Gerhaher and Gerold Huber performed on this almost evocative evening in the sold-out Prinzregententheater as part of the Munich Opera Festival, the intermediate realms of twilight, dreams and moonlit nights, of loneliness and resignation, of melancholy and Hermitage captured so compellingly that its magic was immediately captivating.
