A dispute among young people escalates in Oberhausen. A 17-year-old Ukrainian dies. The case received a lot of attention – including in Ukraine.

After the violent death of a 17-year-old Ukrainian in a dispute among young people in Oberhausen, the responsible person in Essen Police have “no concrete evidence of a xenophobic act.” “Everything currently points to a spontaneous escalation of violence by the 15-year-old main perpetrator,” said the police and public prosecutor’s office. This was revealed by extensive witness interviews and evaluations of evidence. The investigations will continue at full speed.

The 17-year-old – a successful young basketball player – was stabbed during the violent act on Saturday evening at Oberhausen main train station. Three other teenagers survived with serious injuries. Two teenagers were identified as suspects and arrested. An arrest warrant for manslaughter was issued against the 15-year-old from Gelsenkirchen. However, the suspicion against a 14-year-old from Herne was not confirmed. He was released again.

The 17-year-old was considered a great talent in Ukrainian basketball. The basketball club ART Giants Düsseldorf, where the 17-year-old last played, wrote that the young athlete had fled his homeland because of the war. In addition to the 17-year-old who was killed, a critically injured man (18) from Düsseldorf was also Ukrainian. According to the police, Ukrainian media had reported “confirmed findings” that their compatriots had been attacked because of their nationality. The police currently see no evidence of this.
